Virtual Channel Creation removes the key issues that have previously been associated with creating new online channels: the investments needed in production, encoding and storage capacity. Up until now, these capacity investments have prevented regionalized channels from taking off in an online model.

Many programmes are repeated across the channel lineup. In the example of regionalized online channels, a national channel is the same in every region and by encoding and storing the national channel only once, and not for each separate regional channel, significant savings can be made.

To reduce encoder and storage capacity even further, lower bitrate variants of the regional content can be stitched in, without noticeably impacting the quality for the viewer. For some broadcasters, a reduction in live encoding and packaging costs of up to 85% have shown to be possible.

HOW DOES

IT WORK?

Virtual Channel Creation uses Edgeware’s channel-stitching technology to stitch content from various sources into an online channel. The technology is based on Edgeware’s StreamBuilder offering and its unique segmentation and synchronization capabilities. StreamBuilder can eliminate drift caused by poorly encoded inputs, resolve glitches when doing fail-over between encoders and correct content bleed between ad and content segment.
